Assigned to Perrin flying the F-102. Great instrument flying program for UPT grads. I will always remember when my instructor Alex McGowan asked if I was ready for the "sports car" model of the F-102. He aborted on takeoff and I was sent up to Lake Tishamingo to orbit and wait for him. When we got back to the landing pattern I was already short on fuel when a circuit breaker popped leaving the speed brake open. Alex was cool, though. After I grossly overshot the runway on my first landing attempt, he calmly stated that I better make the next one good because I only had one more chance to get it on the ground. As a "butter bar" I was too green to fully appreciate that kind of pressure. Guess that is why the young lads fly the fighters.Gross, Ron

I was a dependent at Perrin AFB, My activities at Perrin centered around the BX and the Officers club swimming pool, which is now filled in with dirt. My father, Charles L. Hoffman, Jr. served at Perrin twice, 1948-1952 and 1958-1961. He was an instructor pilot on his first tour and in Wing Operations on his second tour. Because of injuries suffered on a training mission, he did not retire until 1963. He sold real estate in Denison while attending Southeastern Oklahoma in Durant. He got his degree in 1966 and was hired by American Airlines that fall to teach in their new flight academy at old Amon Carter Field between Dallas and Fort Worth. My parents moved to Irving in 1966 and then to Dallas in 1967, where they still live. I graduated from Denison High in 1964 and my brother in 1966. My earliest memory of Perrin was when the Officer's Club burned down on 31 March 1950. The smoldering ruins intrigued me. There were a couple of bad ice storms in the late 40s and early 50s. In our family photo album is a picture of a T-6 covered with icicles. I had my tonsils removed in the base hospital in 1951 and spent the night there--the only time in my 53 years that I've stayed overnight in a hospital. I also remembered when a plane crashed on the runway, leaving an ugly, black smear. The small BX was in a two-story cadet barracks down near the flight line. When we returned in 1958, Perrin Heights family housing had been built, but we chose to live in Denison again. I spent many weekends at the O-Club pool. Denison had no public pools in those days (segregation, remember?). If you wanted to swim you had to join a country club or go to Lake Texoma. The BX was now located in a one-story H-shaped building about a block from Wing Headquarters. The variety of things available to buy in the BX had increased dramatically since 1952, as had happened all over the Air Force. However, I was only concerned with the comic books and model airplanes that were for sale. The O-Club burned again in the late 50's, was rebuilt, and then had a bad kitchen fire in the early 60's that caused considerable damage. One year (1960 or 1961) my father was project officer for Armed Forces Day. He had quit smoking a couple of months before and was doing fine until the big day. He just had to light up again and he didn't stop again for good until about 20 years later. I remember being disappointed that the Convair B-36 couldn't land at Perrin because the runway was too small. (They were being phased out in 1958 and probably weren't available anyway.) Later, the runway was enlarged and it was a big deal when a B-52 came for Armed Forces Day. When we had left Perrin in 1952 they were flying T-6s and other trainers. I spent many a night going to sleep to the drone of a T-6 flying overhead. When we got back in 1958 there were F-86Ls and then F-102s--both capable of going supersonic!! Later, when I was in the Air Force and assigned to Headquarters Air Training Command, I helped prepare the plan that moved the 3251st Flying Training Squadron (T-37 pilot instructor training) from Perrin to Randolph AFB in 1971. The when assigned to the Headquarters Air Training command in the early 1970's it was my sad duty to help put together the plan that closed Perrin AFB.Horne,Jr. Henry L

I served at Perrin from August 1953 through August 1956, initially as an instrument instructor in the T-33; in 1954, I transitioned to the F-86D and for the remainder of my time at Perrin, I took students through the entire course. I also sat alert for many hours in the scramble facility. It was thought at the time that the Russians could send bombers up through Mexico. We had two armed planes on 5-minute alert and two armed planes on 30-minute alert. At the end of each shift, we would be practice scrambled on passing USAF bomber traffic, usually Canberra's, B-47s, or B-52s. Once I was scrambled on a B-36. I married while at Perrin and daughter, Polly, was born in the Perrin hospital. When I first arrived at Perrin, our equipment was very primitive. Visors decent helmets that didn't hurt automatic seat belt and parachute openers were somewhere in the future. We flew daily over the 4th largest man-made lake in the world without the benefit of life vests and several pilots died in the lake. A great sadness to me was the loss of my beloved flight commander, Capt. Claire N. McCarl and his student in a T-33 crash in the lake. Mac's body was never recovered. I visited the base about 5 years ago and was depressed that almost no trace remains of our time there. I applaud the project to get static aircraft displays. I did find my Weary housing unit (I was the first occupant) which is now a well-kept private home. I can comment on two of the crashes on your list. Joseph King, who crashed in a T-33 in 1953, was my roommate for the few weeks between our commissioning and graduation from flying school. Our class was somewhat odd in that the commission came a couple of weeks before the wings. Joe and another pilot, who I did not know, were landing at night at Hill AFB, Utah. The night was bright moonlight and it was surmised that the surrounding mountains looked too close and whoever was flying tightened the pattern to the point of stalling on final approach. They went in short of the runway. As Joe's closest friend, I had to handle the few items that survived the fire including his class ring. Another friend that crashed was John Terciak whom was also in my squadron. He ejected from an F-86D over Lake Texoma on a very windy day. He was dragged some distance by his chute and he drowned before some fishing boats could reach him. Even though we flew daily over the (then) fourth largest manmade lake in the world, we were not issued any sort of flotation gear. If he had a life vest, the outcome might very well have been different.(J)

Transferred to Perrin in the spring or summer of 1946 when the base was on a 'standby' status. I believe there were about a total of 90 officers and enlisted men stationed there then. Only two barracks were needed for the enlisted personnel. There were no MPs and so we were more or less free to come and go as we pleased. No mess hall facilities were available at the time so they paid us 'per diem' to take care of food. There was also an Officers Club where I worked at nights as a bartender. The only planes I remember being there at that time were AT6s. The highlight of my stay there was meeting James Jabara, an extremely nice officer who later became the first jet ace in Korea. Unfortunately my stay there was very short as they closed the base down I believe it was in November 1946.Kessler, Lawrence L

Lost an F-102 (and pilot) under my control early in '70 -- maybe '69. Kilo Papa 19 went "VFR" against radio orders; flamed out and impacted the side of a hill near McAlester, OK while doing low-level passes over his parent's farm. Shortly after separating (Aug. '70) I witnessed a rescue helicopter assigned to Perrin, crash and burn in a farm pond behind Grayson County College. Terrific assignment; great community; tremendous recreational opportunities.Olsen, John S

Perrin Field, later named Perrin Army Air Force Base, was my first permanent assignment after I enlisted in WW2. I arrived in August 1942. I was assigned to the 511th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron as a mechanic on BT-13A's. They were propeller driven basic flying trainers, affectionately known as the "VULTEE Vibrator"; Vibrator after the horrible way they shook when they were revved up. My crew chief was a local Sherman, TX resident named Sgt. Charles "Scotty" Scott Another name I remember is Cpl. John Fallon, another local Sherman. TX resident. Interestingly, my oldest son, John D. Olsen, now of Beaumont, TX shipped into Perrin within five days of my arrival date, but twenty-four years later, He was a Sage (radar controller) operator and was also involved in a super secret project which he does not discuss to this day. See his comments in this column. Names I remember are T-Sgt. Priest; M-Sgt. Boudreau; Ted Kita; Joe Boggs; Ray Marantz; Morris Katcher; “Fuzzy” Farazano; Sgt. Kerr. Assigned to Perrin in the spring of 1948. The brand new USAF reopened the pilot training program that had basically been shut down since the end of WW-II. After two years of college I took and passed the exams for Aviation Cadet. I received orders assigning me to Class 49-B at Perrin AFB. The USAF was less than a year old. Stepping off the train in Denison, on June 23, 1948, I asked the station agent how to get to Perrin. He looked at me kind of funny and said, "Oh, that place has been closed since the war!" Shortly after that, a blue school bus drove up to the station and the Sgt. driver asked, "Anyone going to Perrin?" And thus began my first nine months as a Cadet assigned to Perrin. However, when I got out to the base I found that it was still "closed since the war". Commander, Medical Squadron, 1962-64, 4780th USAF Hospital Administrator, 1966-70. Wing Surgeon during my first tour was Lt. Col. Willian O. Bellnoski, second tour Wing Surgeons were Lt. Col. Russell C. Payne and Colonel William O. Bellnoski. My First Sergeant was Master Sergeant Ferris B. Choate 1962-64, Hospital Sergeant Major was Chief Master Sergeant Timothy Nicholson. 1966-70. Due to the great performance of the officers and men under my command, I was awarded the First Oak Leaf Cluster to the Air Force Commendation Medal during my tour at Perrin AFB. Our greatest achievement was the complete renovation of the old hospital that was constructed in 1942. The most tragic experience was the loss of three pilots in two separate off base crashes. My greatest personal honor was when Colonel Vermont Garrison pinned the Air Force Commendation Medal on me during my retirement ceremony on January 1, 1970 after completing 24 years of honest and faithful service in the Armed Forces of the United States, six years in the U. S. Army and 18 years in the USAF. My most treasured memory is of the Airmen and Non-Commissioned Officers under my command who always demonstrated loyalty, efficiency and integrity in the performance of their duties.Taylor, Ruth Rawlins

Assigned to Perrin as a I was a flight instructor at Perrin AFB in the 3556th. We flew the trusty old T-6 until our French students crashed so many of them we had to switch to the T-28. Not because the T-28 was safer but we were running out of T-6's. Other mission aircraft were the B-26's. (not the "one-a-day-in-Tampa-bay" variety, but the trusty old Douglas that used to be called the A-26 during WW2. My squadron flew the T-6/T-28 birds. All the instructors and flight commanders were sent to jet upgrade school at Craig AFB, Selma, Alabama and moved to Victoria, Texas. Later after an overseas tour in Japan, I returned to Perrin and was a Flight commander instructing in the F-86D/L., and of course in the trusty old T-birds. I left there in about 1959. went overseas again and retired in 1967. so didn't get to fly at Perrin any more after that.Turner, Clyde R

Perrin was my first duty Location following graduation from Basic Training in Sep 1968. I was assigned to the 4780th and was an Air Operations Specialist working at base Operations. My most memorable remembrance from base Ops was late one Saturday night or early Sunday morning, we were socked in (WOXOF) No ceiling or visibility due to Fog. I remember getting a call on the Crash Phone about a single engine Cessna that was taxiing between the rows of 102's. The AP's caught him. It turns out that this individual was a mechanic at a small airport near Dallas and he was DRUNK AS A SKUNK, borrowed his bosses airplane and decided to go for a flight.(I think he had his girlfriend with him). We think he landed on the main taxiway and there were tree branches tangled in the landing gear. How he survived the flight is a miracle. I remember the State Police arriving and hauling him away. I also remember the numerous Disaster Preparedness exercises we had. I think my Squadron Commander was a Lt. Col. Charles Ellsworth who was also the chief pilot of the base Flight C-47. I had many flight in that aircraft. (a lot to Dickey Gouber AKA Richards Gebauer AFB) I also remember all the Navy trainer aircraft that came up from Navy Chase and Kingsville on Training missions....The student would re-file the flight plan and get the weather briefing and the Instructor would head to the O-Club and purchase as much Coors Beer as he could haul back south as Coors wasn't available in those areas. I left Perrin in June of 1970 for a Tour in Vietnam.Wills, Danny

Assigned to Perrin for two tours, first in 1957-58, straight out of basic, I was the only guy in my flight that got off the train while it was still in Texas, returned in 1963 to 1966 for another three years. I always considered the two tours as some of my better assignments. My first assignment was with the 3555th M&S GP as a clerk, though I spent a good portion of that year as a lifeguard at the Officers Club, on my return in 1963 I was assigned to Pilot Academics (the fenced building opposite the BX) my boss was Major Howard Stevens, a nice man, wish I could say the same for all the instructors, nearly bailed out of the AF but stuck it out.Wilson, Greg.
