The best answer is using <strong>flow maps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flow maps denote the direction a phenomenon is being moved from one location to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Generally speaking, flow maps can be divided as radial, network, and distributive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve already explained <a href=\"http:\/\/gisgeography.com\/cartogram-maps\/\">how to create cartogram maps<\/a>. Now, here are some insights on how to produce flow maps of your own.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Radial Flow Maps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In radial flow maps, lines radiate from an origin node to a single or multiple destination nodes. Each hub links that movement of a phenomenon with a directional flow line, often in a radial pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this example, we use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States foreign trade<\/a> census data. Essentially, this displays what, where, and how much the United States exports to other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/plugins.qgis.org\/plugins\/FlowMapper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FlowMapper plugin<\/a> for QGIS is a quick and easy way to generate flow maps of your own. When you download the plugin, it comes with test data that you can use as a template. But essentially, it boils down to these two text files as inputs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A list of nodes with their <a href=\"http:\/\/gisgeography.com\/latitude-longitude-coordinates\/\">latitude and longitude coordinates<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A square matrix of magnitude values with each row corresponds to a <em>&#8216;from&#8217;<\/em> node and each column corresponds to a <em>&#8216;to&#8217;<\/em> node.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Flow-Maps-Feature.jpg\" alt=\"Flow Maps Feature\" class=\"wp-image-96616\" style=\"width:550px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Flow-Maps-Feature.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Flow-Maps-Feature-300x155.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Flow-Maps-Feature-678x349.jpg 678w, https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Flow-Maps-Feature-768x396.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>After running the plugin, the results look good. As you can see, line thickness depicts the magnitude of that movement. This means that the United States&#8217; biggest trading partners are its neighbors in the north (Canada) and south (Mexico).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Distributive Flow Maps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although similar to radial flow maps, distributive flow maps branch off to their destination. It&#8217;s not the necessary route that is being traveled. But it&#8217;s an abstract way how this commodity or information travels from an origin to multiple destinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the English Coal Exports 1864 uses a <strong>distributive flow map<\/strong>. Given an origin and multiple destinations, this tool uses cost distance and impedance to generate a distributive flow map for you.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Network Flow Maps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Network flow maps<\/strong> show movement along an established network usually based on transportation or communication inter-connectivity. It uses the network information and attributes to delineate the amount of flow on the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/here.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HERE maps<\/a> show the average daily traffic in a given road network. Heathrow Airport serves flights to 84 different countries in the world. With the focal point centered at Heathrow, 84 flow lines would radiate to each possible destination.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mapping the Movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To show the flow of goods, cartographers use lines. And to show the magnitude, they change the width of the lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flow maps can be divided into radial, network, and distributive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with his <a href=\"https:\/\/gisgeography.com\/tobler-first-law-of-geography\/\">First Law of Geography<\/a>, Waldo Tobler once said: \u201cGeographical movement is critically important. This is because much change in the world is due to geographical movement.
